MercadoPago vs Stripe: What are the differences?

Introduction

In today's digital age, payment gateways play a crucial role in facilitating seamless and secure online transactions. Two popular payment gateway solutions are MercadoPago and Stripe. While both offer a range of features and functionality, there are key differences that set them apart from each other. In this article, we will explore the main differences between MercadoPago and Stripe in detail.

  1. Integration Options: MercadoPago primarily focuses on Latin America and provides extensive integration options for businesses operating in this region. On the other hand, Stripe offers global coverage and is widely used by businesses worldwide, making it a more versatile option for international businesses. This difference in integration options allows businesses to choose the payment gateway that aligns with their target audience and market.

  2. Payment Methods: MercadoPago offers various localized payment methods specific to Latin American countries, including bank transfers, credit cards, and cash payments. Stripe, on the other hand, supports multiple payment methods globally, including major credit cards, digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, and localized payment methods in specific regions. This difference in payment method support gives businesses flexibility in catering to their customers' preferred payment options.

  3. Pricing Structure: MercadoPago follows a tiered pricing structure based on specific countries and regions. Pricing may vary depending on the country's currency, transaction volume, and business type. Stripe, on the other hand, follows a more straightforward pricing structure with transparent fees based on the transaction volume. This difference in pricing structure allows businesses to choose the payment gateway that aligns with their budget and financial goals.

  4. Withdrawal Timelines: MercadoPago offers different withdrawal timelines depending on the country, with funds available in the merchant's account on a scheduled basis. Stripe, on the other hand, provides faster withdrawal timelines, usually within two business days, ensuring businesses have quicker access to their funds. This difference in withdrawal timelines can be crucial for businesses requiring faster cash flow.

  5. Developer-Friendly APIs and Documentation: Both MercadoPago and Stripe provide developer-friendly APIs and comprehensive documentation. However, Stripe's documentation and developer resources are widely recognized and appreciated for their clarity and ease of use, making it a preferred choice for developers. This difference in developer resources can significantly impact the ease and speed of integration for businesses.

  6. Fraud Prevention and Dispute Resolution: Stripe offers advanced fraud prevention tools and a robust dispute resolution process, providing businesses with enhanced security and protection against fraudulent activities. While MercadoPago also offers some fraud prevention measures, the level of sophistication may vary compared to Stripe. This difference in fraud prevention and dispute resolution capabilities can be crucial for businesses focused on mitigating fraud risks.

In Summary, while both MercadoPago and Stripe are popular payment gateway solutions, they differ in terms of integration options, payment methods supported, pricing structure, withdrawal timelines, developer resources, and fraud prevention capabilities. Businesses need to carefully evaluate these differences to select the payment gateway that best suits their specific requirements and target audience.

We use GoCardless to simplify the way clients and partners pay for our services. What intrigued us is the quick and easy ACH feature that gives our clients the option to log in with their bank account and shoot the funds directly to our account. The fee, compared to Stripe is less. Stripe and PayPal charge 2.9% + 30c and Stripe also forces the client to enter in all of their payment details manually and then if the payment doesn't work, the client has to try all over again. GoCardless charges 1% + 25c which is much more reasonable dealing with the large projects that we are currently working on.

We integrate GoCardless with Xero to easily send out quick invoices, receive the funds and track all revenue in one place.

With COVID-19 looming over us, businesses are, more than ever, looking for ways to set up online payments.

And having recently gone through implementing both Stripe and GoCardless to get monthly subscriptions set up and automated on my company website, I felt there was no better time to write this blog post!

If you're currently looking at working with a Payment Gateway provider API, or you're currently working with one but are not a fan, are looking to automate things a bit more, or are just generally thinking about changing, then you should have a read of my latest blog post where I compare Stripe and GoCardless.

I compare APIs in depth, specifically the subscription checkout flow that both offer (they're very similar, with some BIG differences).

There are plenty of code examples on how to set it up in a Node.js environment and right at the end, I rate each API based on the following factors:

  • API ease of use
  • API documentation
  • Payment pages
  • Costs / fees
  • Security
  • Developer appeal
  • Customer experience
  • Free Trial

So feel free to check it out, and I hope you like it. Please leave any feedback as it is very helpful. Thanks!

Stripe was made with developers in mind first so the extensibility of it is great! This makes it very easy for us to integrate and automate as much as we need with its APIs and SDK. It allows a lot of customization of exactly what we need to build our applications. They also manage all of our customers from a tax and accounting perspective which makes it easy from a business standpoint.
