PhpStorm vs Sublime Text: What are the differences?

**Key Differences between PhpStorm and Sublime Text**
  1. Coding Features and Language Support: PhpStorm is specifically designed for PHP development and provides advanced coding features such as code completion, code analysis, debugging, and refactoring tools tailored for PHP developers. It offers extensive language support for PHP, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and more. On the other hand, Sublime Text is a versatile text editor that supports multiple programming languages and offers basic coding features but lacks the specialized functionality for PHP development provided by PhpStorm.

  2. Integrated Development Environment (IDE) vs. Text Editor: PhpStorm is a full-fledged IDE that offers an all-in-one development environment with features like project management, version control integration, database tools, and plugins support. It provides a comprehensive set of tools and features to streamline PHP development. Sublime Text, on the other hand, is primarily a text editor with a minimalistic interface and focuses on providing a lightweight and customizable coding environment without the added features and complexity of an IDE.

  3. Code Navigation and Refactoring: PhpStorm excels in code navigation and refactoring capabilities. It allows developers to easily navigate through complex codebases, find usages of variables, functions, classes, and perform various code refactoring tasks like renaming, extracting methods, and optimizing imports. Sublime Text also offers basic code navigation features like Go to Definition and Find All, but it lacks the comprehensive refactoring capabilities provided by PhpStorm.

  4. Debugging Support: PhpStorm provides extensive debugging capabilities for PHP applications, including step-by-step debugging, breakpoints, variable inspection, and remote debugging. It integrates seamlessly with popular PHP debuggers like Xdebug and Zend Debugger. Sublime Text, on the other hand, does not have built-in debugging support. Although there are third-party packages available for debugging in Sublime Text, they do not offer the same level of integration and functionality as PhpStorm.

  5. Collaboration and Version Control: PhpStorm offers built-in support for version control systems like Git, SVN, Mercurial, and others, allowing developers to easily manage their code repositories, perform version control operations, and resolve conflicts. It also provides integration with collaboration tools like GitHub and Bitbucket. While Sublime Text has plugins available for version control integration, it does not offer the same level of built-in support and seamless integration as PhpStorm.

In Summary, PhpStorm is a specialized PHP IDE offering advanced coding features, extensive language support, comprehensive code navigation and refactoring capabilities, debugging support, and built-in collaboration and version control features. Sublime Text, on the other hand, is a lightweight text editor that supports multiple languages but lacks the specialized functionality and comprehensive toolset provided by PhpStorm.

Needs adviceonVisual Studio CodeVisual Studio CodePhpStormPhpStormWebStormWebStorm

When I switched to Visual Studio Code 12 months ago from PhpStorm I was in love, it was great. However after using VS Code for a year, I see myself switching back and forth between WebStorm and VS Code. The VS Code plugins are great however I notice Prettier, auto importing of components and linking to the definitions often break, and I have to restart VS Code multiple times a week and sometimes a day.

We use Ruby here so I do like that Visual Studio Code highlights that for me out of the box, with WebStorm I'd need to probably also install RubyMine and have 2 IDE's going at the same time.

Should I stick with Visual Studio Code, or switch to something else? #help

Decided

Visual Studio Code became famous over the past 3+ years I believe. The clean UI, easy to use UX and the plethora of integrations made it a very easy decision for us. Our gripe with Sublime was probably only the UX side. VSCode has not failed us till now, and still is able to support our development env without any significant effort.

Goland being paid, as well as built only for Go seemed like a significant limitation to not consider it.

Decided

Since communication with Github is not necessary, the Atom is less convenient in working with text and code. Sublim's support and understanding of projects is best for us. Notepad for us is a completely outdated solution with an unacceptable interface. We use a good theme for Sublim ayu-dark
