Postman vs ReadMe Build: What are the differences?

  1. Integration of API testing: Postman is primarily used for API testing and development, while ReadMe Build focuses more on API documentation and building. This fundamental difference in focus provides distinct advantages in terms of functionality and user experience for each platform.

  2. Collaboration features: Postman offers team collaboration features that allow multiple users to work on API development projects simultaneously and share collections easily. In contrast, ReadMe Build focuses more on enabling collaboration around API documentation, making it simple for teams to create and maintain API documentation collectively.

  3. Automated testing: Postman provides robust capabilities for automated testing of APIs, allowing users to create and run tests in an automated manner. On the other hand, ReadMe Build does not offer the same level of automated testing features, focusing instead on providing an intuitive interface for creating and editing API documentation.

  4. API mocking: Postman includes API mocking capabilities that allow users to simulate API responses without implementing the actual API. In contrast, ReadMe Build does not offer API mocking functionality, as it is more geared towards assisting developers in creating comprehensive and user-friendly API documentation for their projects.

  5. API monitoring: Postman offers API monitoring features that allow users to monitor the performance and availability of APIs in real-time. This functionality is not available in ReadMe Build, which prioritizes providing tools for generating and maintaining high-quality API documentation.

  6. Security testing: Postman includes security testing features that enable users to analyze and identify security vulnerabilities in APIs. This aspect is not a primary focus in ReadMe Build, which concentrates on streamlining the process of creating clear and informative API documentation for developers.

In Summary, Postman and ReadMe Build offer distinct sets of features and functionalities, with Postman being more focused on API testing and development, while ReadMe Build is tailored towards API documentation and collaboration.

From a StackShare Community member: "I just started working for a start-up and we are in desperate need of better documentation for our API. Currently our API docs is in a README.md file. We are evaluating Postman and Swagger UI. Since there are many options and I was wondering what other StackSharers would recommend?"

I use Postman because of the ease of team-management, using workspaces and teams, runner, collections, environment variables, test-scripts (post execution), variable management (pre and post execution), folders (inside collections, for better management of APIs), newman, easy-ci-integration (and probably a few more things that I am not able to recall right now).

I use Swagger UI because it's an easy tool for end-consumers to visualize and test our APIs. It focuses on that ! And it's directly embedded and delivered with the APIs. Postman's built-in tools aren't bad, but their main focus isn't the documentation and also, they are hosted outside the project.

I recommend Postman because it's easy to use with history option. Also, it has very great features like runner, collections, test scripts runners, defining environment variables and simple exporting and importing data.

Postman supports automation and organization in a way that Insomnia just doesn't. Admittedly, Insomnia makes it slightly easy to query the data that you get back (in a very MongoDB-esque query language) but Postman sets you up to develop the code that you would use in development/testing right in the editor.
