Graphite vs Sentry: What are the differences?
What is Graphite? A highly scalable real-time graphing system. Graphite does two things: 1) Store numeric time-series data and 2) Render graphs of this data on demand.
What is Sentry? Cut time to resolution for app errors from five hours to five minutes. Sentry is an open-source platform for workflow productivity, aggregating errors from across the stack in real time. 500K developers use Sentry to get the code-level context they need to resolve issues at every stage of the app lifecycle.
Graphite can be classified as a tool in the "Monitoring Tools" category, while Sentry is grouped under "Exception Monitoring".
Some of the features offered by Graphite are:
- carbon - a Twisted daemon that listens for time-series data
- whisper - a simple database library for storing time-series data (similar in design to RRD)
- graphite webapp - A Django webapp that renders graphs on-demand using Cairo
On the other hand, Sentry provides the following key features:

"Render any graph" is the top reason why over 14 developers like Graphite, while over 215 developers mention "Consolidates similar errors and makes resolution easy" as the leading cause for choosing Sentry.
Graphite and Sentry are both open source tools. It seems that Sentry with 21.4K GitHub stars and 2.45K forks on GitHub has more adoption than Graphite with 4.59K GitHub stars and 1.2K GitHub forks.
According to the StackShare community, Sentry has a broader approval, being mentioned in 1341 company stacks & 435 developers stacks; compared to Graphite, which is listed in 97 company stacks and 21 developer stacks.
Looking for a tool which can be used for mainly dashboard purposes, but here are the main requirements:
- Must be able to get custom data from AS400,
- Able to display automation test results,
- System monitoring / Nginx API,
- Able to get data from 3rd parties DB.
Grafana is almost solving all the problems, except AS400 and no database to get automation test results.
You can look out for Prometheus Instrumentation (https://prometheus.io/docs/practices/instrumentation/) Client Library available in various languages https://prometheus.io/docs/instrumenting/clientlibs/ to create the custom metric you need for AS4000 and then Grafana can query the newly instrumented metric to show on the dashboard.
I essentially inherited a Shopify theme that was originally created by an agency. After discovering a number of errors being thrown in the Dev Console just by scrolling through the website, I needed more visibility over any errors happening in the field. Having used both Sentry and TrackJS, I always got lost in the TrackJS interface, so I felt more comfortable introducing Sentry. The Sentry free tier is also very generous, although it turns out the theme threw over 15k errors in less than a week.
I highly recommend setting up error tracking from day one. Theoretically, you should never need to upgrade from the free tier if you're keeping on top of the errors...
