Azure Application Insights vs Datadog: What are the differences?

Azure Application Insights is Microsoft's performance monitoring service, while Datadog is a versatile monitoring and analytics platform that covers application performance, infrastructure, and logs. Let's discuss the key differences between Azure Application Insights and Datadog.

  1. Integration with Azure Services: Azure Application Insights is tightly integrated with various Azure services such as Azure Monitor, Azure Functions, and Azure DevOps. This tight integration enables seamless tracking and monitoring of applications within the Azure ecosystem. On the other hand, Datadog provides integration with a wide range of cloud services including AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure, allowing users to monitor and analyze applications across different cloud environments.

  2. Monitoring Capabilities: Azure Application Insights focuses primarily on application monitoring, providing features like dependency tracking, custom logging, and performance monitoring. It also supports application performance profiling, allowing developers to identify and fix performance-related issues. Conversely, Datadog offers a comprehensive monitoring solution that covers infrastructure monitoring, application monitoring, log management, and APM (Application Performance Monitoring).

  3. Supported Platform: Azure Application Insights mainly supports applications built on the Microsoft stack, such as .NET, ASP.NET, and Azure-hosted services. While it also supports other platforms and languages, it is particularly optimized for the Microsoft ecosystem. In contrast, Datadog supports a wide range of platforms and languages including Java, Python, Ruby, Node.js, and many more. This broad platform support makes it suitable for diverse application environments.

  4. Data Visualization and Dashboards: Azure Application Insights provides basic built-in charts and visualizations, allowing users to create simple dashboards to monitor key metrics. However, it does not offer advanced data visualization capabilities out of the box. Datadog, on the other hand, provides a rich set of customizable visualization options, including graphs, heatmaps, and live updating dashboards. This allows users to create powerful and insightful visualizations to monitor and analyze their application metrics.

  5. Alerting and Notification: Azure Application Insights offers basic alerting and notification capabilities that can be configured based on predetermined thresholds. It supports integrations with Azure Monitor and Azure DevOps for alerting and incident management. Datadog provides more advanced and flexible alerting options, allowing users to create complex alert conditions based on metric patterns, anomalies, and events. It also offers integrations with popular collaboration tools like Slack and PagerDuty for seamless incident response.

  6. Pricing and Cost: Azure Application Insights offers a free tier with limited features and data retention, while premium features are available through different pricing plans based on data volume. The cost can vary depending on the amount of data ingested and the selected features. Datadog also offers a free tier with limited features and data retention. However, it provides different pricing plans based on the types of monitoring required, such as infrastructure monitoring, APM, and log management. The cost of Datadog may vary depending on the selected modules and the volume of data ingested.

In summary, Azure Application Insights is tightly integrated with Azure services, primarily focuses on application monitoring within the Microsoft ecosystem, and provides basic visualization and alerting capabilities. On the other hand, Datadog supports various cloud platforms, offers a comprehensive monitoring solution with advanced visualizations and flexible alerting options, and provides cost-effective pricing plans tailored to specific monitoring needs.

Needs adviceonDatadogDatadogDynatraceDynatraceAppDynamicsAppDynamics

Hey there! We are looking at Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, and New Relic as options for our web application monitoring.

Current Environment: .NET Core Web app hosted on Microsoft IIS

Future Environment: Web app will be hosted on Microsoft Azure

Tech Stacks: IIS, RabbitMQ, Redis, Microsoft SQL Server

Requirement: Infra Monitoring, APM, Real - User Monitoring (User activity monitoring i.e., time spent on a page, most active page, etc.), Service Tracing, Root Cause Analysis, and Centralized Log Management.

Please advise on the above. Thanks!

Needs adviceonAmazon EKSAmazon EKSKubernetesKubernetesAWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)

We are looking for a centralised monitoring solution for our application deployed on Amazon EKS. We would like to monitor using metrics from Kubernetes, AWS services (NeptuneDB, AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, etc) and application microservice's custom metrics.

We are expected to use around 80 microservices (not replicas). I think a total of 200-250 microservices will be there in the system with 10-12 slave nodes.

We tried Prometheus but it looks like maintenance is a big issue. We need to manage scaling, maintaining the storage, and dealing with multiple exporters and Grafana. I felt this itself needs few dedicated resources (at least 2-3 people) to manage. Not sure if I am thinking in the correct direction. Please confirm.

You mentioned Datadog and Sysdig charges per host. Does it charge per slave node?

Decided

I chose Datadog APM because the much better APM insights it provides (flamegraph, percentiles by default).

The drawbacks of this decision are we had to move our production monitoring to TimescaleDB + Telegraf instead of NR Insight

NewRelic is definitely easier when starting out. Agent is only a lib and doesn't require a daemon
