G Suite vs Google Cloud Platform: What are the differences?
Introduction:
G Suite and Google Cloud Platform are two distinct but closely related offerings from Google. While both platforms are used for business and productivity purposes, they have some key differences in terms of their features and functionalities.
Infrastructure vs Productivity Tools: The main difference between G Suite and Google Cloud Platform lies in their primary focus. G Suite is primarily a suite of cloud-based productivity tools that includes Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc. On the other hand, Google Cloud Platform is a collection of cloud computing services primarily aimed at developers and IT professionals.
User Interface and Functionality: G Suite provides a user-friendly and intuitive web interface that is designed for non-technical users. It focuses on providing collaboration tools and productivity applications accessible through web browsers. In contrast, Google Cloud Platform offers a more technical interface and functionality, tailored for developers and IT professionals who require greater control over infrastructure and software development.
Pricing and Billing Model: G Suite follows a subscription-based pricing model, where organizations pay a fixed monthly or annual fee per user. This pricing model includes a set of productivity tools bundled together. In contrast, Google Cloud Platform operates on a "pay as you go" pricing model. Users are billed based on the resources and services they utilize, such as virtual machines, storage, data transfer, etc.
Data Storage and Management: G Suite focuses on cloud-based file storage and collaboration, allowing users to store and access their documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in the cloud. Google Cloud Platform, on the other hand, provides various storage options including object storage, block storage, and file storage. It also offers advanced data management and analytics services, such as BigQuery and Cloud Spanner.
Developer Tools and APIs: Google Cloud Platform provides a wide range of tools and APIs specifically designed for developers, allowing them to build, deploy, and scale applications. It offers services like App Engine, Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Functions, and Cloud Pub/Sub, enabling developers to implement and manage their applications seamlessly. G Suite, however, does not provide similar developer-focused tools and APIs.
Scalability and Customization: Google Cloud Platform offers a highly scalable infrastructure, allowing businesses to scale their applications and services as needed. It provides advanced features like auto-scaling and load balancing to handle varying levels of traffic. G Suite, on the other hand, is more focused on providing a standardized set of productivity tools and may have limitations in terms of scalability and customization options.
In summary, G Suite is primarily aimed at providing cloud-based productivity tools for non-technical users, while Google Cloud Platform is focused on offering cloud computing services and infrastructure for developers and IT professionals. The main differences include their primary focus, user interface, pricing models, storage and management capabilities, developer tools and APIs, and scalability and customization options.
We first selected Google Cloud Platform about five years ago, because HIPAA compliance was significantly cheaper and easier on Google compared to AWS. We have stayed with Google Cloud because it provides an excellent command line tool for managing resources, and every resource has a well-designed, well-documented API. SDKs for most of these APIs are available for many popular languages. I have never worked with a cloud platform that's so amenable to automation. Google is also ahead of its competitors in Kubernetes support.
We are highly dependent on G Suite for all our collaboration and productivity needs, from Gmail and Calendar to Sheets and Docs. While it may not be as robust as Microsoft's offerings in those areas, it's totally cloud-based, we've never had any downtime issues and it integrates well with our other tools like Slack. We write and collaborate on all our specs/PRDs in Docs, share analyses via Sheets and handle our meetings via Calendar. #StackDecisionsLaunch #ProductivitySuite #Collaboration #DocumentCollaboration
