As a small startup we are very conscious about picking up the tools we use to run the project. After suffering with a mess of using at the same time Trello , Slack , Telegram and what not, we arrived at a small set of tools that cover all our current needs. For product management, file sharing, team communication etc we chose Basecamp and couldn't be more happy about it. For Customer Support and Sales Intercom works amazingly well. We are using MailChimp for email marketing since over 4 years and it still covers all our needs. Then on payment side combination of Stripe and Octobat helps us to process all the payments and generate compliant invoices. On techie side we use Rollbar and GitLab (for both code and CI). For corporate email we picked G Suite. That all costs us in total around 300$ a month, which is quite okay.

Couple of years later, there certainly were some overlap with the features offered by Intercom 's engagement module , but our team kept on using this tool given the greater range of functionality / capabilities.
I have been using MailChimp and I found it the best choice for Newsletter and building email templates.
The only annoying part as a developer is when I started using their API through mandrill, The API itself work perfect, but the issue is in the templates.
I start by creating a template in Mailchimp then submit it to mandrill (this gives me the impression that API is a second citizen in mailchimp, but not a big deal, it works) then I update the template code through Mandrill and here start the problem because you loose the Sync between MailChimp and Mandrill. Mandrill has a very poor template editor and you can't Sync it back to MailChimp to use their greate template editor.
Everything else is great.
We love intercom.io, from customer management to automatic emails. Great wat to stay in touch with your users.
Intercom powers both the email support, and support via the inline message window on the web. Custom events are sent from both the browser via click and Wistia video events, as well as from the Rails application, to give a complete view of user activity from within Intercom. Intercom let us segment the users based on trialling, purchased, and levels of engagement.
At zerotoherojs.com there are two kinds of mailing that I send.
- Important system emails.
- News and updates.
I send the important emails using Mailgun, and news and updates using MailChimp.
For managing your mailing list, and sending occasional newsletters, MailChimp is the best.
I don't know what we would do without Intercom. It's the best tool I've ever found for knowing who your users are and establishing a bulletproof line of communication with them both outbound and inbound.

MailChimp is used to provision our newsletters to our customers. To outsource the Email traffic its a good choice for the quality and services they provide.
Top-of-funnel email campaigns. Email communication with people who exist outside of our core automated systems (aka outside of our digital journey).
We use MailChimp for collecting signups on landing pages, our main app, for drip campaigns, and to send updates to users.
MailChimp is used by our business development team for email marketing and customer communications.
Full-lifecycle communications via email and in-app messaging, for batch and automated campaigns.
