Rollbar vs Sentry vs TrackJS: What are the differences?
Introduction: In the realm of error monitoring and logging, Rollbar, Sentry, and TrackJS are prominent tools that assist developers in identifying and resolving issues within their applications. These platforms offer various features and functionalities tailored towards improving the debugging process, but they also possess distinct differences that set them apart.
Deployment Options: Rollbar and Sentry both offer on-premise deployment options, allowing users to host the tool on their own servers for enhanced security and control. On the contrary, TrackJS is a cloud-based service, providing a hassle-free setup that eliminates the need for managing infrastructure.
Integrations: Rollbar boasts a vast array of integrations with popular development tools and platforms, making it easier for developers to incorporate error tracking seamlessly into their workflow. Sentry also offers numerous integrations, while TrackJS focuses more on comprehensive browser monitoring to identify frontend issues.
Performance Monitoring: Sentry stands out in performance monitoring, providing detailed insights and metrics on app performance to help developers optimize speed and efficiency. Rollbar offers performance monitoring as well, but TrackJS primarily focuses on error tracking and resolution.
User Interface: Rollbar flaunts a user-friendly interface that presents error data in a visually appealing and easily digestible format, facilitating efficient troubleshooting. On the contrary, Sentry and TrackJS provide interfaces that may be more complex and require a learning curve to navigate effectively.
Community Support: Sentry has a robust community support system with active forums and documentation, offering assistance and resources for users encountering issues or seeking guidance. Rollbar and TrackJS also provide support but may not have as extensive a community presence as Sentry.
Price Plans: Rollbar and TrackJS offer free plans with limited features, making them ideal for small projects or personal use. In contrast, Sentry's free plan is more restrictive, but it boasts a range of affordable paid plans with advanced features for larger organizations.
In Summary, Rollbar, Sentry, and TrackJS each have unique offerings in the error monitoring and logging space, with distinctions in deployment options, integrations, performance monitoring, user interface, community support, and price plans.
I essentially inherited a Shopify theme that was originally created by an agency. After discovering a number of errors being thrown in the Dev Console just by scrolling through the website, I needed more visibility over any errors happening in the field. Having used both Sentry and TrackJS, I always got lost in the TrackJS interface, so I felt more comfortable introducing Sentry. The Sentry free tier is also very generous, although it turns out the theme threw over 15k errors in less than a week.
I highly recommend setting up error tracking from day one. Theoretically, you should never need to upgrade from the free tier if you're keeping on top of the errors...
