Firebase vs Optimizely: What are the differences?

## Introduction
Firebase and Optimizely are two popular platforms in the realm of web development and optimization. Understanding the key differences between them can help developers make informed decisions about which platform best suits their needs.

1. **Data Infrastructure**:
Firebase provides a real-time database that is synced across all clients in milliseconds, making it perfect for applications requiring instant updates. On the other hand, Optimizely focuses more on A/B testing and experimentation, allowing developers to test different versions of their website or app.

2. **User Segmentation**:
Firebase allows for user segmentation based on various factors like demographics, behavior, and more, enabling personalized experiences for users. In contrast, Optimizely's primary focus is on split testing and targeting different variants to specific segments of users.

3. **Ad Integration**:
Firebase seamlessly integrates with Google's advertising platform, making it easier for developers to monetize their apps through ads. Optimizely, on the other hand, does not have direct advertising integration but focuses on optimizing user experience and conversions through testing.

4. **Machine Learning Capabilities**:
Firebase offers machine learning tools for predictive analytics and user segmentation, enabling developers to create smarter, data-driven applications. Conversely, Optimizely lacks built-in machine learning capabilities but excels in A/B testing and optimization strategies.

5. **Community Support**:
Firebase has a large and active community of developers who contribute plugins, libraries, and provide support, making it easier for beginners to get started. Optimizely, while also having a supportive community, is more focused on advanced experimentation techniques, which may require a higher level of expertise.

6. **Cost Structure**:
Firebase follows a pay-as-you-go pricing model, charging developers based on usage and services used, which can be cost-effective for smaller projects. On the other hand, Optimizely's pricing is based on the features and scale of experimentation required, which may be more suitable for larger enterprises with specific optimization needs.

In Summary, Firebase and Optimizely offer distinct features and functionalities tailored to different aspects of web development and optimization, including data infrastructure, user segmentation, ad integration, machine learning capabilities, community support, and cost structures.

We are starting to work on a web-based platform aiming to connect artists (clients) and professional freelancers (service providers). In-app, timeline-based, real-time communication between users (& storing it), file transfers, and push notifications are essential core features. We are considering using Node.js, ExpressJS, React, MongoDB stack with Socket.IO & Apollo, or maybe using Real-Time Database and functionalities of Firebase.

I would recommend looking hard into Firebase for this project, especially if you do not have dedicated full-stack or backend members on your team.

The real time database, as you mentioned, is a great option, but I would also look into Firestore. Similar to RTDB, it adds more functions and some cool methods as well. Also, another great thing about Firebase is you have easy access to storage and dead simple auth as well.

Node.js Express MongoDB Socket.IO and Apollo are great technologies as well, and may be the better option if you do not wish to cede as much control to third parties in your application.

Overall, I say if you wish to focus more time developing your React application instead of other parts of your stack, Firebase is a great way to do that.
