Datadog vs LightStep: What are the differences?

Introduction

This Markdown code provides a comparison between Datadog and LightStep, highlighting the key differences between the two platforms.

  1. Data Collection and Monitoring: Datadog offers comprehensive data collection and monitoring capabilities, allowing users to monitor a wide range of metrics, logs, and traces in real-time. LightStep, on the other hand, focuses more on distributed tracing and observability, providing detailed insights into service performance and latency.

  2. Integration Ecosystem: Datadog boasts a vast integration ecosystem, with support for a wide range of popular tools and services. It can seamlessly integrate with cloud providers, containers, orchestration platforms, databases, and more, enabling users to collect and analyze data from various sources. LightStep, while offering some integrations, prioritizes the deep integration of distributed tracing into the application architecture, providing a more specialized toolset.

  3. User Interface and Visualization: Datadog offers a user-friendly interface with customizable dashboards and visualizations. Users can easily create charts, graphs, and other visual representations of their data, making it simpler to understand and analyze metrics. LightStep focuses more on providing in-depth insights into distributed traces, enabling users to visualize and analyze the flow of requests across a distributed system.

  4. Alerting and Monitoring: Datadog provides robust alerting capabilities, allowing users to set up custom alerts based on specific conditions or thresholds. It also offers a variety of predefined integrations for popular services, making it easier to set up alerts. LightStep, on the other hand, focuses more on proactive notification and issue resolution by providing detailed insights into distributed traces and performance anomalies.

  5. Pricing and Scalability: Datadog offers flexible pricing options based on the number of hosts or metrics, making it suitable for organizations of all sizes. It also supports scalable infrastructure, allowing users to handle large workloads. LightStep, being a specialized and focused tool, may have different pricing models and scalability options, potentially catering to specific and targeted use cases.

  6. Developer-Focused Features: LightStep provides developer-centric features such as deep analysis of distributed traces and service dependencies, making it a valuable tool for troubleshooting and optimizing application performance in complex microservices environments. Datadog, while offering similar capabilities, also incorporates broader monitoring and analytics features suitable for a wider range of use cases.

In summary, Datadog provides comprehensive data collection, monitoring, and visualization capabilities with a wide integration ecosystem and user-friendly interface. LightStep, on the other hand, specializes in distributed tracing and observability, offering deep insights into service performance and latency, particularly suited for troubleshooting and optimizing application performance in complex microservices environments.

Needs adviceonDatadogDatadogDynatraceDynatraceAppDynamicsAppDynamics

Hey there! We are looking at Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, and New Relic as options for our web application monitoring.

Current Environment: .NET Core Web app hosted on Microsoft IIS

Future Environment: Web app will be hosted on Microsoft Azure

Tech Stacks: IIS, RabbitMQ, Redis, Microsoft SQL Server

Requirement: Infra Monitoring, APM, Real - User Monitoring (User activity monitoring i.e., time spent on a page, most active page, etc.), Service Tracing, Root Cause Analysis, and Centralized Log Management.

Please advise on the above. Thanks!

Needs adviceonAmazon EKSAmazon EKSKubernetesKubernetesAWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)

We are looking for a centralised monitoring solution for our application deployed on Amazon EKS. We would like to monitor using metrics from Kubernetes, AWS services (NeptuneDB, AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, etc) and application microservice's custom metrics.

We are expected to use around 80 microservices (not replicas). I think a total of 200-250 microservices will be there in the system with 10-12 slave nodes.

We tried Prometheus but it looks like maintenance is a big issue. We need to manage scaling, maintaining the storage, and dealing with multiple exporters and Grafana. I felt this itself needs few dedicated resources (at least 2-3 people) to manage. Not sure if I am thinking in the correct direction. Please confirm.

You mentioned Datadog and Sysdig charges per host. Does it charge per slave node?

Decided

I chose Datadog APM because the much better APM insights it provides (flamegraph, percentiles by default).

The drawbacks of this decision are we had to move our production monitoring to TimescaleDB + Telegraf instead of NR Insight

NewRelic is definitely easier when starting out. Agent is only a lib and doesn't require a daemon
