AppDynamics vs Sentry: What are the differences?

Introduction:

AppDynamics and Sentry are both application monitoring tools that help identify and fix issues in software applications. However, they have key differences in terms of their features, use cases, and target audience.

  1. Deployment and Integration: AppDynamics provides a comprehensive platform for monitoring the performance of complex distributed applications in production. It supports a wide range of programming languages, platforms, and cloud environments. On the other hand, Sentry is focused on error tracking and provides SDKs that can be easily integrated into applications built with various programming languages and frameworks.

  2. Alerting and Notifications: AppDynamics offers advanced alerting and notification capabilities to proactively identify and address performance issues. It can send alerts via various channels such as email, SMS, and integrations with popular communication tools like Slack. Sentry also provides alerting features but is primarily focused on notifying developers about errors and exceptions occurring in applications.

  3. Error Monitoring and Diagnostics: Sentry excels in error tracking and provides detailed information about exceptions, crashes, and error events in applications. It allows developers to capture and analyze stack traces, breadcrumbs, and context information to diagnose and fix issues efficiently. AppDynamics also offers error monitoring capabilities, but it provides a broader set of performance monitoring features along with error tracking.

  4. Transaction Tracing and Performance Monitoring: AppDynamics offers end-to-end transaction tracing capabilities, allowing developers to visualize and analyze the entire flow of a transaction across various components and services. It provides insights into performance bottlenecks, latency, and dependencies across the application stack. Sentry, on the other hand, focuses on error tracking and does not provide extensive transaction tracing features.

  5. User Experience Monitoring: AppDynamics includes user experience monitoring features that provide insights into user interactions, page load times, and browser performance. It captures real-user data and allows developers to identify and troubleshoot issues impacting user experience. Sentry does not have built-in user experience monitoring capabilities.

  6. Scalability and Enterprise Support: AppDynamics is known for its scalability and is widely used in enterprise environments to monitor large-scale applications. It offers enterprise-grade features, such as role-based access control, high availability, and advanced analytics. Sentry, while capable of handling moderate traffic and number of errors, might require additional configuration and infrastructure for high scalability and enterprise-level support.

In Summary, AppDynamics is a comprehensive application performance monitoring platform with extensive features for monitoring, diagnosing, and optimizing complex distributed applications in production. Sentry, on the other hand, is primarily focused on error tracking and provides a lightweight yet powerful solution for developers to identify, track, and resolve errors and exceptions in their applications.

Needs adviceonDatadogDatadogDynatraceDynatraceAppDynamicsAppDynamics

Hey there! We are looking at Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, and New Relic as options for our web application monitoring.

Current Environment: .NET Core Web app hosted on Microsoft IIS

Future Environment: Web app will be hosted on Microsoft Azure

Tech Stacks: IIS, RabbitMQ, Redis, Microsoft SQL Server

Requirement: Infra Monitoring, APM, Real - User Monitoring (User activity monitoring i.e., time spent on a page, most active page, etc.), Service Tracing, Root Cause Analysis, and Centralized Log Management.

Please advise on the above. Thanks!

Needs adviceonSite24x7Site24x7AppDynamicsAppDynamicsDynatraceDynatrace

Hi Folks,

I am trying to evaluate Site24x7 against AppDynamics, Dynatrace, and New Relic. Has anyone used Site24X7? If so, what are your opinions on the tool? I know that the license costs are very low compared to other tools in the market. Other than that, are there any major issues anyone has encountered using the tool itself?

Decided

I essentially inherited a Shopify theme that was originally created by an agency. After discovering a number of errors being thrown in the Dev Console just by scrolling through the website, I needed more visibility over any errors happening in the field. Having used both Sentry and TrackJS, I always got lost in the TrackJS interface, so I felt more comfortable introducing Sentry. The Sentry free tier is also very generous, although it turns out the theme threw over 15k errors in less than a week.

I highly recommend setting up error tracking from day one. Theoretically, you should never need to upgrade from the free tier if you're keeping on top of the errors...
