AppSignal vs Datadog: What are the differences?

Introduction

This Markdown provides a comparison between AppSignal and Datadog, highlighting their key differences.

  1. Pricing: AppSignal offers a more cost-effective option for small to medium-sized businesses, with plans starting at $25 per month, while Datadog's pricing structure tends to be more tailored towards larger enterprises and can be more expensive.
  2. Supported Technologies: AppSignal focuses primarily on Ruby on Rails, Elixir, and Phoenix, providing deep insights and detailed error reporting for these frameworks. In contrast, Datadog offers support for a wider range of technologies, including Python, Java, PHP, and more, making it a more versatile option for developers.
  3. Monitoring Capabilities: AppSignal is specialized in application and server monitoring, providing granular visibility into application performance metrics, database queries, and background jobs. In contrast, Datadog offers a broader range of monitoring capabilities, including infrastructure monitoring, APM, log management, and more, making it a more comprehensive solution for monitoring an entire system stack.
  4. User Interface: AppSignal provides a clean and user-friendly interface, presenting relevant data in an easy-to-understand manner. On the other hand, Datadog offers a more comprehensive and customizable dashboard, allowing users to create personalized visualizations and reports.
  5. Alerting: AppSignal provides alerting capabilities for application and server monitoring, allowing users to set up custom thresholds and receive notifications via integrations with tools like Slack and PagerDuty. Datadog excels in this area, offering advanced alerting features, anomaly detection, and machine learning algorithms for more intelligent and accurate alert notifications.
  6. Integrations: Datadog offers a wide range of integrations with popular third-party tools and services, such as AWS, Azure, and Kubernetes, allowing users to gain deeper insights into their infrastructure. AppSignal, while not as extensive in terms of integrations, focuses on providing seamless integration with the frameworks it supports, offering deeper visibility into the application-specific performance.

In summary, AppSignal is a cost-effective option focused on application and server monitoring, with deep insights and error reporting for Ruby on Rails, Elixir, and Phoenix. On the other hand, Datadog provides a more comprehensive monitoring solution, supporting a wider range of technologies, offering additional monitoring capabilities, and excelling in alerting and integrations.

Needs adviceonDatadogDatadogDynatraceDynatraceAppDynamicsAppDynamics

Hey there! We are looking at Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, and New Relic as options for our web application monitoring.

Current Environment: .NET Core Web app hosted on Microsoft IIS

Future Environment: Web app will be hosted on Microsoft Azure

Tech Stacks: IIS, RabbitMQ, Redis, Microsoft SQL Server

Requirement: Infra Monitoring, APM, Real - User Monitoring (User activity monitoring i.e., time spent on a page, most active page, etc.), Service Tracing, Root Cause Analysis, and Centralized Log Management.

Please advise on the above. Thanks!

Needs adviceonAmazon EKSAmazon EKSKubernetesKubernetesAWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)

We are looking for a centralised monitoring solution for our application deployed on Amazon EKS. We would like to monitor using metrics from Kubernetes, AWS services (NeptuneDB, AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, etc) and application microservice's custom metrics.

We are expected to use around 80 microservices (not replicas). I think a total of 200-250 microservices will be there in the system with 10-12 slave nodes.

We tried Prometheus but it looks like maintenance is a big issue. We need to manage scaling, maintaining the storage, and dealing with multiple exporters and Grafana. I felt this itself needs few dedicated resources (at least 2-3 people) to manage. Not sure if I am thinking in the correct direction. Please confirm.

You mentioned Datadog and Sysdig charges per host. Does it charge per slave node?

Decided

I chose Datadog APM because the much better APM insights it provides (flamegraph, percentiles by default).

The drawbacks of this decision are we had to move our production monitoring to TimescaleDB + Telegraf instead of NR Insight

NewRelic is definitely easier when starting out. Agent is only a lib and doesn't require a daemon
