Datadog vs Sentry vs TrackJS: What are the differences?

### Introduction
In this comparison, we will outline the key differences between Datadog, Sentry, and TrackJS.

1. **Data Collection and Monitoring**: Datadog offers a wide range of data monitoring capabilities, including logs, metrics, and traces, with robust visualization tools. Sentry primarily focuses on error tracking and monitoring to identify and fix issues in real-time. TrackJS is primarily focused on JavaScript error monitoring and provides detailed diagnostics and rich context for front-end errors.

2. **Integration and Scalability**: Datadog provides extensive integration options with various services and tools, making it highly scalable for complex environments. Sentry also offers integration with popular tools and services, but its primary focus is on error tracking. TrackJS integrates seamlessly with popular frameworks and libraries, focusing solely on JavaScript error monitoring.

3. **Alerting and Notifications**: Datadog offers customizable alerting and notification options based on metrics, logs, and traces, allowing teams to set up alerts for specific conditions. Sentry provides real-time error alerts and detailed notifications to help developers address issues promptly. TrackJS offers customizable alerting options for JavaScript errors, aiding in quick resolution of front-end issues.

4. **Application Performance Monitoring (APM)**: Datadog includes APM capabilities to provide insights into application performance and identify bottlenecks in the codebase. Sentry focuses on error tracking and diagnostics rather than overall application performance monitoring. TrackJS offers detailed APM metrics specifically for JavaScript applications to optimize front-end performance.

5. **Security and Data Protection**: Datadog ensures data security and compliance through robust encryption and access controls for sensitive information. Sentry prioritizes data protection for error tracking and monitoring, ensuring that sensitive data is handled securely. TrackJS implements strict security measures to protect front-end error data and user information from unauthorized access.

In Summary, Datadog, Sentry, and TrackJS offer unique monitoring and error tracking capabilities, with Datadog excelling in comprehensive data monitoring, Sentry specializing in real-time error tracking, and TrackJS focusing on detailed JavaScript error diagnostics.

Needs adviceonDatadogDatadogDynatraceDynatraceAppDynamicsAppDynamics

Hey there! We are looking at Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, and New Relic as options for our web application monitoring.

Current Environment: .NET Core Web app hosted on Microsoft IIS

Future Environment: Web app will be hosted on Microsoft Azure

Tech Stacks: IIS, RabbitMQ, Redis, Microsoft SQL Server

Requirement: Infra Monitoring, APM, Real - User Monitoring (User activity monitoring i.e., time spent on a page, most active page, etc.), Service Tracing, Root Cause Analysis, and Centralized Log Management.

Please advise on the above. Thanks!

Needs adviceonAmazon EKSAmazon EKSKubernetesKubernetesAWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)

We are looking for a centralised monitoring solution for our application deployed on Amazon EKS. We would like to monitor using metrics from Kubernetes, AWS services (NeptuneDB, AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, etc) and application microservice's custom metrics.

We are expected to use around 80 microservices (not replicas). I think a total of 200-250 microservices will be there in the system with 10-12 slave nodes.

We tried Prometheus but it looks like maintenance is a big issue. We need to manage scaling, maintaining the storage, and dealing with multiple exporters and Grafana. I felt this itself needs few dedicated resources (at least 2-3 people) to manage. Not sure if I am thinking in the correct direction. Please confirm.

You mentioned Datadog and Sysdig charges per host. Does it charge per slave node?

Decided

I chose Datadog APM because the much better APM insights it provides (flamegraph, percentiles by default).

The drawbacks of this decision are we had to move our production monitoring to TimescaleDB + Telegraf instead of NR Insight

NewRelic is definitely easier when starting out. Agent is only a lib and doesn't require a daemon
