Datadog vs Logstash vs New Relic: What are the differences?

Datadog vs. Logstash vs. New Relic

Datadog, Logstash, and New Relic are popular tools used for monitoring and analyzing data in real-time for businesses. While all three tools serve to provide insights into system performance, there are key differences that differentiate them from each other.

1. **Data Collection**: Datadog primarily focuses on monitoring metrics and logs from various sources in a centralized platform, making it easier to visualize trends and anomalies in the data. Logstash, on the other hand, specializes in ingesting, transforming, and shipping log data to desired destinations. New Relic provides monitoring capabilities across the entire technology stack, offering deep insights into application performance, infrastructure, and user experience.

2. **Integration**: Datadog offers support for a wide range of third-party integrations and plugins, allowing users to connect different tools and services seamlessly. Logstash, being part of the Elastic Stack, integrates well with Elasticsearch for powerful search and analysis capabilities. New Relic provides integrations with various technologies to capture performance data seamlessly across different environments.

3. **Alerting and Visualization**: Datadog provides advanced alerting features that allow users to set up custom alerts based on specific metrics and thresholds. Logstash offers visualization capabilities through Kibana, enabling users to create dashboards and visualize log data effectively. New Relic's AI-powered alerting system helps in detecting anomalies and providing proactive alerts to avoid downtime.

4. **Scalability**: Datadog is known for its scalability, making it suitable for businesses of all sizes, from startups to large enterprises. Logstash is highly scalable as part of the Elastic Stack, enabling horizontal scaling to handle large volumes of log data efficiently. New Relic's cloud-based architecture allows for easy scalability as workload demands fluctuate.

5. **Community Support**: Datadog has an active community of users and developers, providing resources and support for troubleshooting and optimization. Logstash benefits from the robust community surrounding the Elastic Stack, offering a wealth of knowledge and resources for users. New Relic also has a strong community presence, with forums and user groups to exchange ideas and best practices.

6. **Cost**: Datadog offers a flexible pricing model based on the number of hosts and metrics, allowing businesses to scale their monitoring needs accordingly. Logstash is open-source and free to use, although there may be additional costs associated with the Elasticsearch stack for advanced features. New Relic offers a subscription-based pricing model, with different tiers based on the level of monitoring and support required.

In Summary, Datadog, Logstash, and New Relic offer unique features and capabilities for monitoring and analyzing data, catering to different needs and preferences within the business environment.

Needs adviceonDatadogDatadogDynatraceDynatraceAppDynamicsAppDynamics

Hey there! We are looking at Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics, and New Relic as options for our web application monitoring.

Current Environment: .NET Core Web app hosted on Microsoft IIS

Future Environment: Web app will be hosted on Microsoft Azure

Tech Stacks: IIS, RabbitMQ, Redis, Microsoft SQL Server

Requirement: Infra Monitoring, APM, Real - User Monitoring (User activity monitoring i.e., time spent on a page, most active page, etc.), Service Tracing, Root Cause Analysis, and Centralized Log Management.

Please advise on the above. Thanks!

Needs adviceonAmazon EKSAmazon EKSKubernetesKubernetesAWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB)

We are looking for a centralised monitoring solution for our application deployed on Amazon EKS. We would like to monitor using metrics from Kubernetes, AWS services (NeptuneDB, AWS Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, etc) and application microservice's custom metrics.

We are expected to use around 80 microservices (not replicas). I think a total of 200-250 microservices will be there in the system with 10-12 slave nodes.

We tried Prometheus but it looks like maintenance is a big issue. We need to manage scaling, maintaining the storage, and dealing with multiple exporters and Grafana. I felt this itself needs few dedicated resources (at least 2-3 people) to manage. Not sure if I am thinking in the correct direction. Please confirm.

You mentioned Datadog and Sysdig charges per host. Does it charge per slave node?

Decided

I chose Datadog APM because the much better APM insights it provides (flamegraph, percentiles by default).

The drawbacks of this decision are we had to move our production monitoring to TimescaleDB + Telegraf instead of NR Insight

NewRelic is definitely easier when starting out. Agent is only a lib and doesn't require a daemon
